Types of Weeds

Weeds are broadly classified into the following categories:

1. Broadleaf Weeds (Dicotyledons):

Have wide leaves with a network of veins

Examples:

1. Parthenium hysterophorus (Congress grass)

2. Chenopodium album (Bathua)

3. Grassy Weeds (Monocotyledons):

Grass-like appearance, narrow leaves with parallel veins

Examples:

Cynodon dactylon (Bermuda grass)

3. Sedges:

Look similar to grasses but have triangular stems

Examples:

Cyperus rotundus (Nutgrass)

Cyperus esculentus (Yellow nutsedge)

4. Aquatic Weeds:

Grow in water bodies and wet areas

Examples:

Eichhornia crassipes (Water hyacinth)

5. Woody & Shrubby Weeds:

Harder stems, may appear along roadsides or abandoned plots

Examples:

Lantana camara
Prosopis juliflora (Vilayati Babul)
